Perfect Mojito

Learn how to make my favorite mojito recipe with white rum, fresh lime, and mint! I’m sharing all my tips and tricks, including how to make a single mojito or a pitcher for a crowd.

Classic Rum Mojitos Recipe Video

When summer hits, this mojito recipe is my go-to! It’s simple, refreshing, and surprisingly easy to make at home.

Below, I’ve shared all my tips and tricks for making the perfect mojito, including some fun variations and a non-alcoholic version. For a fruity twist, check out our incredible blueberry mojito recipe.

Key Ingredients

  • Rum: I use white rum to make mojitos because it’s lighter and crisp, and the color shows off what else is in the glass (like the green mint). You can use any white rum you enjoy. I’d just skip the overproof rums (like higher-proof 151 and the like). The rum you use doesn’t need to break the bank. A good quality, reasonably priced white rum will do the trick.
  • Fresh Mint and Lime: Fresh ingredients make the absolute best mojitos. I muddle my mint and lime juice for the cocktail and then garnish the glass with more mint and a lime slice. You can add additional fruits as we do in this blueberry mojito. If you love minty cocktails, you might also enoy our mint julep cocktail, which muddles fresh mint with bourbon.
  • Sugar: I use plain granulated sugar, but you can use simple syrup. Here’s our recipe for homemade simple syrup.
  • Club Soda: I love club soda when making cocktails because it has a bit of salt added, which makes the cocktail taste even better. Sparkling water or seltzer water will work, too, but they often don’t have the added salt or minerals.

Mojito Recipe Variations

I love a classic mint mojito, but there are quite a few ways you can mix it up. Here are five of my favorites:

  1. Fruity Mojitos: Make strawberry mojitos by muddling sliced strawberries with mint and lime juice. You can also experiment with other fruits like blueberries, peaches, blackberries, or raspberries. Here’s our recipe for blueberry mojitos.
  2. Spicy Mojitos: Add a kick to your mojito by muddling slices of jalapeƱo or serrano pepper with the mint and lime juice.
  3. Cucumber Mojitos: For a super refreshing cocktail, muddle a few cucumber slices into the mint and lime.
  4. Coconut Mojitos: Add 2 to 4 tablespoons of coconut cream to the cocktail shaker with the muddled mint, lime juice, sugar, and rum. Shake with ice until frothy, and then serve over ice with a splash of club soda.
  5. Virgin Mojitos: Use zero-proof rum or leave the rum out entirely and increase the club soda. You can substitute the club soda with flavored sparkling water to add flavor.

Makes 1 drink

Watch Us Make the Recipe

You Will Need

2 ounces (1/4 cup) white rum

1 ounce (2 tablespoons) fresh lime juice

8 fresh mint leaves, plus more for garnish

2 teaspoons sugar

1 ounce (2 tablespoons) club soda

Lime slice for garnish

Directions

1Add lime juice, sugar, and 8 mint leaves to a cocktail shaker.

2Use the end of a wooden spoon or cocktail muddler to bash (or muddle) the mint into the lime juice and sugar. This releases oils from the mint and helps the sugar dissolve into the lime juice.

3Add the rum, stir well, and then pour into a glass filled with ice, leaving about an inch of room.

4Top with club soda and serve with extra mint leaves and a lime slice.

Adam and Joanne's Tips

  • Mojitos in a pitcher: To make enough for 4 people, follow these amounts: 1/2 cup freshly squeezed lime juice, 3 tablespoons sugar, 32 fresh mint leaves, 1 cup white rum, 4 cups ice, 1/2 cup club soda, and 4 lime slices for garnish. Muddle the lime juice, sugar, and mint in a pitcher, add the rum and divide between 4 ice-filled glasses. Top each mojito with club soda.

Made this using plantation rum (dark), sweet blackberries and pomegranate, garnished with a candied orange slice. Random, but I just happened to have these particular additions lying around and wanted to use them up. So ridiculously easy, extremely flavorful. Will be keeping this one in my back pocket! Wish I could attach a photo!

Great recipe, by using lime juice as opposed to muddling lime, mint & sugar you avoid the bitter oils in the lime skin. Best mojito I’ve made from this recipe.

Delicious! But why do the drinks in the pictures look a different color? Dark rum instead of white? Brown sugar or syrup? Bitters? Something citrusy-yellow? The drink in the video looks as expected with these ingredients, as did ours. Just wondered if there is a secret ingredient, or maybe just the lighting.

Hi Patti, there is no secret ingredient. The drinks look different because the photo and the video were shoot at different times. Hope you enjoy the cocktail šŸ™‚

Love it can’t get enough of it, best drink since the Bushwhacker.I have two daughters that live in USVI so every trip I always bring home lots of Rum, I tried this with whipped and Key Lime Rum and it was so wonderful, I grow my own mint, so now I may have to plant a lot more as the rum n mint are going to disappear fast with this recipe. Five stars and thanks for sharing!

Is there a reason why you stir instead of shaking? Just curious…

I first enjoyed a refreshing Mojito while on holiday in Mexico and I’ve never looked back, although that may be due to the fact that from that point on I don’t remember a thing! Seriously though the Mojito is an absolute winner, especially when shared with someone special.

I wish my little dry town had a bar where I could get these! Yes, I know you can make them yourself, but I don’t go through rum that quick.
